Restaurant planned for Exeter’s Kimball Island

Owners of the Green Bean and Station 19 intend to open a restaurant and commissary kitchen on Kimball Island at the base of the String Bridge.

Jeff Turner and Lori Whitney, who have owned the property for three years, will go before the Zoning Board of Adjustment May 16 to request parking relief for the project, which would boast desirable views of the Exeter River and walking access from downtown, and are currently in talks with the Historic District Commission to finalize the process for redoing the building.

The plan is to convert a portion of the 4 String Bridge property on the .35-acre island into a 140-seat restaurant, combine two of the units in the second building and establish a 2,000-square-foot commissary kitchen, which would primarily serve the restaurant on the property and also likely produce various goods for retail sale on-site in the future.

“The property there is kind of in rough shape,” Turner said of the 1640s original Exeter gristmill. “We just haven’t known what to do with it, but at the same time we are restaurateurs so it’s kind of inevitable.” Read more at
